King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in Canada for a visit meant to underscore Canada’s sovereignty in the face of tensions with the US.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement on Monday morning that “The Royal Visit is a reminder of the bond between Canada and the Crown – one forged over generations, shaped by shared histories, and grounded in common values,”
On arrival, the Royal couple were welcomed by dignitaries and an arrival guard from the Royal Canadian Dragoons.
The King and Queen will spend the day meeting elected officials and with the local community.
On Tuesday, the King will deliver the Speech of the Throne – which will lay out the government’s priorities and goals – to Parliament.
A monarch has not delivered the throne speech in Canada since 1977, making this royal visit a rare occasion.
Shortly after his Liberal party won Canada’s general election in April, Carney confirmed the visit and sent the King an invitation early this year. The visit coincides with a trade battle with the United States, the nation’s neighbor and closest economic ally. Additionally, US President Donald Trump has stated time and time again that the nation would benefit from becoming the 51st US state.
