Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attracted severe criticism after claiming on live television that money had been handed to senators so they may enjoy their break.
The screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s nominations for cabinet positions was completed by the Upper Chamber on Monday.

The senators then decided to postpone the plenary until September 26.

Before the request for adjournment was made, Akpabio was seen speaking to his colleagues in a viral video on social media. He said that the senators have received money from Magaji Tambuwal, the national assembly clerk, to “enjoy” their holidays.

“In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the national assembly,” he said.

The Senate President was quickly informed by his colleagues that he was speaking before live television and press cameras.

“I withdraw that statement,” he said.
