Thai authorities report that three individuals were murdered in a shooting at an upscale mall in Bangkok’s city center.
A foreign national was one of the other four victims of the tragedy.
After giving himself up, a suspect, 14, was taken into custody. Police claimed that he had been carrying a weapon.
According to the AFP news agency, the prime minister declared that the situation had been stabilized and that police were cleaning up the area.
Social media footage from earlier showed customers leaving the shopping center as it was promptly evacuated and its doors were shut.
Also closed was the nearby Siam metro station.
People submitted videos that appeared to be from the mall itself. Four loud booms that obviously sound like gunshots can be heard in one.
Additionally, witnesses reported that they started hiding in stores and restrooms.
The owner of a shop on the second level of the mall, who was there throughout the incident, told the BBC that she heard several gunshots.
The victims’ families have received the “deepest condolences” of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
Even though Thailand has a relatively high incidence of gun ownership, mass shootings are uncommon there.
In an attack with a gun and a knife at a daycare center in the province of Nong Bua Lamphu in north-east Thailand in October of last year, an ex-policeman killed at least 37 people, the majority of them children.
In the city of Nakhon Ratchasima in 2020, a soldier shot and murdered 29 individuals while also injuring numerous more.
