Customers of GTBank have already begun to voice their unhappiness at not being able to complete transactions on the bank’s website.
_________
The general suspicion is hackers may have gained access to the domain address of Guaranty Trust Bank, also known as GTBank, the largest financial institution in Nigeria.
Clients reported the event late on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, after it became inaccessible to the internet site. According to them, attempts to connect onto www.gtbbank.com resulted in error messages.
The development occurs just twenty-four hours after the domain name was renewed for an additional five years, commencing on August 13, 2023, and ending on March 21, 2029, as reported by a number of websites that analyze domain data.
Experts in cybersecurity who have worked in Nigerian banking have speculated that the bank’s login credentials may have been compromised rather than the domain name being taken and sold online for a higher profit.
No cyber group has taken credit for the incident. But in what seems to be a plot to use phishing to obtain client data, the attackers appear to have added another HTTP layer to the website.
