Following a string of problems and declining viewership at the US news network, Sir Mark Thompson, the former leader of the BBC and New York Times, has been named CNN’s new president.
Chris Licht, who held the positions of chairman and CEO of CNN for 13 months, is replaced by Sir Mark.
Star anchors Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon were fired from the network, and CNN+ was shut down after just one month of operation.
CNN will be under Sir Mark’s direction for the 2024 US presidential election.
It will be at the same time when Donald Trump is being accused of crimes.
Former US President Jimmy Carter unsuccessfully attempted to sue CNN for defamation, saying the network had fabricated a “false and malicious” report about him.
CNN’s previous boss Jeff Zucker had been forced to resign in February 2022 after failing to disclose a romantic relationship with a senior executive.
Sir Mark has been dubbed “a formidable force for CNN and journalism at this pivotal time” by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
