Abba Kyari, a suspended deputy commissioner of police (DCP), has been granted bail by a federal high court in Abuja in the amount of N50 million.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) filed a 24-count complaint in June alleging non-disclosure of assets against Kyari and his two siblings, Mohammed and Ali Kyari.
James Omotosho, the presiding judge, declared on Thursday that the defendants’ accusations are bailable.
The judge set the suspended officer’s bail at N50 million with two sureties in the same amount.
Omotosho said that the sureties have to own N25 million worth of property located within the court’s jurisdiction.
Kyari’s release from jail custody, the court clarified, is contingent on the outcome of a separate case in which he is being tried alongside four other people for their suspected involvement in narcotics trafficking.
Kyari’s siblings had already been granted bail by the court.
After being listed as sought by the NDLEA due to claimed ties to a global narcotics syndicate, Kyari was captured on February 14, 2022.
On March 7, 2022, he was arraigned alongside Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu who are members of the police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
Others are Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne — two suspected drug traffickers who were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Upon arraignment, Kyari and four other defendants pleaded not guilty.
However, Umeibe and Ezenwanne, the sixth and seventh defendants pleaded guilty and were convicted accordingly.
