The Israeli military has launched air strikes on targets belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

he Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon have both been the targets of airstrikes by the Israeli military against Hamas sites.

The military claimed that the assaults were in retaliation for a barrage of 34 rockets that Hamas was responsible for firing on Thursday from Lebanon into northern Israel.

Once the raids started, militants in Gaza fired dozens more rockets.

After two nights of Israeli police raids at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem earlier this week, tensions are high.

The third holiest mosque in Islam was the scene of violent clashes with Palestinians after the raids, which infuriated people in the area.

The largest such barrage in 17 years was launched from Lebanon, although Hamas declined to claim responsibility.
