Local media in Krasnodar, in southern Russia, report that a former Russian submarine captain who served as a mobilisation officer was shot and killed while running.
According to Rossiya 1 of Russia, an unidentified shooter shot and killed Stanislav Rzhitsky, 42, on Monday.
His Strava fitness app profile, according to several Russian media outlets, may have allowed for tracking.
The killing is the subject of a probe by Russian authorities.
The country’s Investigative Committee, which is akin to the US FBI, announced the start of a murder investigation and that investigators will work to “establish all the circumstances of the incident, as well as the person who committed the crime and his motives.”
His address and personal details had also been uploaded to the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets (Peacemaker), a vast unofficial database of people considered to be enemies of Ukraine.
The word “Liquidated”, in red letters, has now been superimposed on his photograph on the site.
In a statement, Ukraine’s military intelligence said the park was deserted due to heavy rain, “so there are no witnesses who could provide details or identify the attacker”.
Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian interior ministry adviser, tweeted that Russian media were accusing Ukraine of involvement but he did not say whether that suspicion was justified.
“So far Russian police cannot find a single surveillance camera that would show the crime being committed. The search continues,” he said.
According to the Russian daily newspaper Kommersant, the former naval officer was shot in the back and the chest while out for his morning jog in a park next to the Olimp sports facility.
According to Baza, a police-affiliated Russian Telegram group, the murderer may have traced Cpt. Rzhitsky’s runs on Strava because he frequently ran the same route.
Cpt. Rzhitsky’s public profile, which was examined by BBC Verify, reveals that he routinely ran through the region where he is said to have been slain. The BBC’s facial analysis verified that the profile belonged to Cpt. Rzhitsky.
