The search for a tourist submersible that vanished on Sunday during a dive to the Titanic’s wreck is in a race against time.
When communication with the small submarine was lost approximately an hour and a half into its dive, there were five crew on board.
The rescue effort has been going on all night in the middle of the Atlantic, but nothing has been seen so far.
Hamish Harding, a British businessman, and Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, a father and son, are among the five people on board.
The US Coast Guard estimated that the five crew members had no more than four days’ worth of oxygen as of Monday afternoon.
The North Atlantic is the scene of a significant search and rescue operation after a submersible probing the Titanic wreck vanished on Sunday.
One hour and forty-five minutes into the dive, the research vessel Polar Prince lost touch with the Titan sub’s crew. As of Monday at 17:00 EST (22:00 BST), the US Coast Guard assessed that the sub has between 70 and 96 hours of emergency oxygen.
Government authorities have joined the rescue effort, and tour operator OceanGate said it was looking into every possibility to send the crew back home safely.
On Sunday morning, the Polar Prince arrived close to where the Titanic went down in the Atlantic. In a Facebook post, Titan passenger Hamish Harding stated that they planned to begin the submersible dive at 4:00 local time.
The five-person crew “submerged Sunday morning, and the crew of the Polar Prince lost contact with them approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive,” the Boston Coast Guard, which is in charge of the search operation, wrote on Twitter.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said he hoped the missing submarine and its passengers would be “swiftly found”. He was speaking alongside US counterpart Antony Blinken in London, where they met to discuss bilateral relations and the situation in Ukraine.
Cleverly said the thoughts of the government were with “those individuals who are currently in the submersible in the North Atlantic”.
“We wish them all the luck, and of course we hope that they will be swiftly found and returned to their loved ones,” he said. Blinken said: “I can only echo that, James.”
